nova scotia universities welcome international students

Fast Track Immigration for Canadian International Students

International students studying in Nova Scotia colleges and universities now have a fast track immigration path to immigrate to Nova Scotia through the Nova Scotia Nominee program which was announced June 6, 2014. Nova Scotia is the home of the historic Pier 21 in the Halifax port, where one million immigrants landed between 1928-1971.

The Nova Scotia nominee program is a special program that Nova Scotia negotiated with the Immigration and Citizenship Canada as a way to counter the decline in its population.   Nova Scotia’s population is expected to decline over the next 20 years as young Nova Scotians continue to leave the province.  Its population as of 2013 is estimated at around 950,000.

Every year, Nova Scotia universities have 7000 international students, but less than 50 applied to stay.  Under the new nominee program, graduates with a permanent job offer can apply for permanent residence in Nova Scotia.

Immigration Minister Lena Metlege Diab said international graduates are ideal candidates to immigrate to Nova Scotia.

“International graduates are educated, they’ve made friends, they know the language, and they’re already familiar with all the great things Nova Scotia has to offer,” said Ms. Diab. “Over the past year, there hasn’t been a provincial door open to help them stay. Today, that changes.”

Named the New Immigration Pathway Created for International Students, this move will certainly affect the decisions of international students as to which universities in Canada to go to.  It makes Nova Scotia an attractive destination for international students looking for higher education.
